Pontiff Worries About Mideast Christians

"The Pope is worried above all for those who suffer because of the lack of future prospects," he said, according to L'Osservatore Romano. "Many leave their land, either for lack of posts in work or for the lack of recognition in a society influenced by Islam, for a lack of full liberty and respect."

2009 Twenty-Fourth World Youth Day Message

Youth is a special time of hope because it looks to the future with a whole range of expectations. When we are young we cherish ideals, dreams and plans. Youth is the time when decisive choices concerning the rest of our lives come to fruition. Perhaps this is why it is the time of life when fundamental questions assert themselves strongly: Why am I here on earth? What is the meaning of life? What will my life be like? And again: How can I attain happiness? Why is there suffering, illness and death? What lies beyond death?

Easter 2009 Homily

"They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don't know where they put him". Mary Magdalene has lost track of Her Lord and is panicked; she and many others as well.

How very many people are seeking the Lord and yet not finding Him in politics, economics, international justice, and constitutions of so-called modern Christian countries. It is just as Mary Magdalene said: "they have taken the Lord, and we do not know where they have put him."

Holy Thursday 2009 Homily

As for the gift of His presence in the Eucharist, Jesus in the Cenacle, so close to where we are right now, conferred upon His bishops and the priests, a specific task, acting in His name ,each time that the sacrifice of His Body and His Blood is celebrated: "Do this in memory of Me." (Lk. 22:19)

Homily for Palm Sunday 2009

Jesus enters into Jerusalem without armies or police, without separation walls or checkpoints. He enters in all simplicity, riding on an ass, fulfilling the prophecy of Zachariah: "Shout for joy, O daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king shall come to you; a just savior is he, meek, and riding on an ass, on a colt, the foal of an ass." This cry, the cry that we have been repeating all along our route, really says it: "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"
